Lifetime fill is a real term with a specific meaning, and it is not the one most owners take from it. What a jolting cold shift is actually telling you.

'Sealed for life' units are the most common failure we see. A fluid and filter service at the right interval is the cheapest insurance available for a modern automatic.
A lifetime fill usually means no fluid change in the service schedule, not that the fluid lasts the life of the gearbox. In practice the fluid breaks down with heat and distance, and shift quality and component life go with it.
We service ZF automatics and DSG and S-tronic dual-clutch gearboxes with the correct fluid and filter, reset the adaptations with factory software so the gearbox relearns its shift points, and diagnose shudder, slipping and harsh shifts before quoting any repair.

Lifetime is not defined as the life of the car. The fluid degrades with heat and distance, and ZF, which builds the automatics in many European cars, publishes its own fluid-change recommendations. Our article on lifetime transmission fluid explains why.
The mechatronic unit is the dual-clutch gearbox's hydraulic and electronic control unit. Servicing it means changing the fluid and filter at the specified interval and resetting the clutch adaptations so the gearbox engages smoothly.
Gearbox work varies too widely, from a fluid service to a clutch pack replacement. Every job is quoted in writing before work begins.
